DELIVERING FOOD FOR THE INNOCENT ANIMALS IN UKRAINE'S WARZONE 11th Sep 2014, by The Great Animal Rescue Chase
Cars have been streaming in a single direction away from the Ukrainian city of Donetsk as families try to get far, far away from this hot spot seized by Pro-Russian separatists. Many of the exiting cars are using trailers to carry coffins with them as the terrified residents flee with all that is most precious to them. Yet not everyone is bringing their pets along, and a small group of brave women are staying behind because they alone must care for the dogs of war.
At the animal shelter here in...

In Cambridge Declaration of Consciousness, scientists concur that animals feel no less than humans.
Animals are conscious beings, capable of understanding cause-and-effect relationships, forming abstract thoughts, solving problems, using language, making tools, exhibiting long-term memory, and showing empathy, in many cases with skills that are superior to those of humans. But more importantly, animals can comprehend when they are being abused and killed, and they feel anxiety, fear and pain, ...

How Do I Know My Pet Is Becoming A Senior?
The old adage is basically true: each year of a dog’s or cat’s life roughly equates to seven human years, with some variation. The good news is, chronological age is less important than functional age.
Gray hairs may be the most obvious sign of old age, but other cues may be even more important. Perhaps your “eating machine” leaves kibble in the bottom of the food bowl. Maybe he’s stopped greeting you at the front door or no longer follows y...

Spay-Neuter Subsidy For 4 Market Cats (Then Lai Fatt’s) 10th Sep 2014, by AnimalCare
Ah Fatt, as he is popularly known, has recently been overwhelmed by the large number of cats dumped at the market where he works as a fishmonger. It started during the month prior to the festive season and it hasn’t stopped.
Lately, a lady has been dumping her pet cats (about 10 or more each time) at the market during closing time. When questioned, the lady says she is not allowed to get her cats spayed due to religious reasons so they keep breeding and she has to dump them somewhere.
It...

Turtle update from Lao PDR.
In our Sanctuary in Lao, the turtle enclosure upgrade is now complete and we released them into their new ponds today.
For some of them it has been a while since they actually had the space to swim. So it took them a bit of time to get used to the pool, which slopes down to a depth of nearly a meter.
But they are all happy now.
We just need to do a bit of landscaping around the pool to make the ground more fun for them!

Love is Ageless, and our Executive Director Corinne Fong shares with readers of "pets" magazine (in the current, Aug/Sep 2014 issue) how owners of SENIOR PETS can better ensure they are given the best care possible.
Older companion animals may also better suit working adults and people who are retired or semi-retired. First-time pet owners who may have little or no experience with puppies/kittens/much younger animals may also be better off with a mature companion animal. (Senior animals are ge...

"Hi! My name is Rachel. I arrived at the SPCA with a couple brothers and sisters, but sadly I’m the only one left now…I was adopted once by a really loving family, but then I had to go back because one of my humans got a severe allergic reaction to me. Shortly afterwards I was adopted a second time, but they didn't want to keep me! I don’t know why, everyone says I’m sweet and full of life…I would love any family that would be willing to accept me and allow me to come into the house fr...

WOMAN GOES BACK TO PROTECT SKUNK CROSSING ROAD
Liz Bedard of Massachusetts was on her way home from a shopping trip and a very long day at work when she came across a skunk crossing the road slowly, and her intuition guided her to turn back and help:
"As I am driving down the hill, I notice a skunk on the grassy embankment start to make his way toward the street," Liz said. "I drive past and get an overwhelming feeling of dread for him so I turned my car around and headed back in his directio...

CHAINED FOR LIFE: Kept "only for alarm", his owner claimed that he is "afraid of dogs", and has never let it off the chain before. The poor dog's infected wound was in such a bad state that it nearly cost him his life. He is now receiving proper medical attention in the vet's clinic.
Chaining a dog goes against its natural instincts. Dogs are not meant to be tied up! Do you know that studies show that chained dogs are much more likely to bite than unchained dogs? Please, help to educate your f...
