The New Patio Alpha? 26th Jan 2014, by AnimalCare
As Mr Miyagi says, “Fighting not good. But if must fight, WIN.”
Timmy and Vincent are the patio alphas. Vincent keeps all newcomers at bay (he only failed with Mr Zurik and Heidi) while Timmy chases anyone who intrudes into his vegetable garden. Timmy is also a bully of sorts. But luckily, nobody bites or scratches. It’s just a lot of noise and the aggressor giving chase.
But lately, Ginger (yes, you read that right, mild-mannered sweet-faced Ginger) had been showing that he is...

Mr Zurik’s Eye Wound 26th Jan 2014, by AnimalCare
It was only yesterday morning that I detected Mr Zurik’s eye wound. He had been squinting for a few days and I’d washed his eye with salt water, but yesterday, a wound appeared.
The wound was quite deep and a bit of pus oozed from it when I pressed on it. Yes, the Russian allowed me to.
Being Saturday, my regular vet doesn’t work, so I thought I’d try to nurse the wound myself.
I washed it with saline, then applied iodine and the Wound Protector (“Happy Bum GelR...

Willy Must Have Gone “on Leave” Again 26th Jan 2014, by AnimalCare
Yesterday morning, Willy did not turn up for breakfast.
I sort of “knew” that he won’t be coming.
Somehow, you just “know”.
Willy has this habit of disappearing during festive seasons. He disappeared for 10 days during Hari Raya, but reappeared after that long break. I was worried sick that time until I realised perhaps he had a home and his owner had sent him for Hari Raya boarding.
But then, he disappeared for another holiday as well after that, and now, he has di...

A Quilt Cover And A Blankie For A Birthday Boy 26th Jan 2014, by AnimalCare
Not too long ago, a friend asked if my mum could help make a quilt cover for her and in return, she would give a generous donation to AnimalCare. She drew the design for us too. The quilt cover was meant for Chinese New Year.
Here it is:
Thank you very much for your generous donation for the animals!
And another friend asked if we could make a blankie for a birthday boy whose Japanese name is “dragon”.
So, I sewed this blanket, making it as boyish as possible. Stripes give it a mascu...

The Prehistoric Paw Prints Of Dog Cancers 26th Jan 2014, by AnimalCare
Debbie Lindsey shared this: http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2014/01/23/ 265236618/contagious-cancer-in-dogs-leaves-prehist oric-paw-prints?utm_content=socialflow&utm_cam paign=nprfacebook&utm_source=npr&utm_mediu m=facebook
Murchison and her colleagues found that the infectious cancer is a living fossil. The modern tumors contain the DNA of an ancient pooch that hung out with prehistoric people thousands of years ago.
According to the comments that follow (verification is needed), t...

FOOD FOR 1,305 RESCUED DOGS & CATS IN UKRAINE 26th Jan 2014, by The Great Animal Rescue Chase
Sharing this Post Helps So Much!!!
The Harmony Fund is helping sponsor the feeding of 1,305 cats and dogs at the Shelter Kiev SOS in Ukraine - an extraordinary refuge with an incredible back-story.
In the early 90s, the shelter's founder Tamara Tarnawska gathered fellow journalists and, with the use of hidden cameras, they revealed a long-time practice rounding up stray dogs and cats to be killed for their fur at a local factory. After Tamara brought down a massive worldwide protest against ...

OWL FOUND IN VACANT BUILDING SOARS FREE!
Last week, a snowy owl was rescued after it became trapped inside a vacant building on India Street in Portland, Maine. Tom Gagne, an experienced falconer, rescued the owl from the third floor of the Grand Trunk Railroad building. After spending a few days convalescing at Avian Haven, this one was ready to fly free again and released over a nearby marsh. So thankful to all who cared for this beautiful creature.

Click, Click, Click! 25th Jan 2014, by AnimalCare
I was motivated by the two articles on photographing animals, so I took some pictures of my ever-ready model, Ginger, yesterday.
It’s not the angle, Ginger really has significantly big paws. It’s really cute, and we call them his “puppy paws”.
Peek-a-boo!
Take the photos at eye level, right?
Oh, I took many more, but these are the more “presentable” ones! So yes, I have a long way to go…
And yes, that’s a Minion blanket! Wait for it…after ...

The Patio8 In The Morning 25th Jan 2014, by AnimalCare
This was yesterday’s early morning breakfast.
Willy comes to the patio nowadays.
After months of confining Timmy in the cage during meals, he still has not learnt that he cannot snatch other cats’ food.
Luckily Mr Zurik does not snatch food. However, he has this habit of butting my hand. For example, when he sees me scooping food into his bowl, he would butt my hand off so that he can get to the food immediately. And his head-butt is VERY strong.
Now, why is Vincent also in the ...

"CALL OF THE WILDMAN" TV SHOW ACCUSED OF HURTING ANIMALS
According to a report issued by Mother Jones on Tuesday, the Animal Planet television series "Call of the Wildman" has been criticized for a series of situations endangering the welfare of animals including the following:
1. Wrestling a drugged captive zebra to the ground
