Dina Shahab (dina_sm66@yahoo.com / 012-381 0109) is seeking help in rehoming a few kittens (due to be euthanised) from the DBKL Pound.
This is her story:
Dear Dr Chan,
First, I would like to say that what you're doing is really wonderful and wish that there's more people like you. I took my cat to spay in klinik kembiri spca in ayer panas today and ends up rescuing 4 kittens as they will be put to sleep if no one adopts them. From what I understand they will only keep cats for 4 days and dogs 7 days before puting them to sleep. I can't take care of them as I have 30 cats/kittens at home already (I guess I just wanted to give them a chance to live) and I manage to find 1 person willing to foster 1 kitten (may god bless her kind soul) but couldn't take all 4 as she too has a lot of cats to care.. So I reserved the kittens and promise to take them on Saturday.. If I can ask your assistance in finding home for these kittens I'd be very gratefull.
I still wish however, to be able to save all of the animals in the dbkl pound. They are all cramped in a cage and until now I still have that image in my mind.. There's even a mother cat with 2 tiny babies in the same cage as all of them. They were all crying and some just look at me as if they know their fate I'm thinking, Why couldn't the authority neuter/spay and let them roam free? Is there any way that we can take out all of them? And the worst part is, according to Dr Krishnan of klinik kembiri, these pet are dump by their own owners!!
I manage to take pix of them earlier at the dbkl and they have put them in a smaller cage but more spacious than the ones they were in..
Dina
If you'd like to save these kittens from death row, please contact Dina at her email or hp given above).
Let's give these innocent kittens a second chance at life.
Please forward this request.
If you want a pet (animal companion!), please don't buy, adopt from the street or the pound.
I absolutely agree with Dina that the authorities should spay-neuter and return to the colony, but here are some problems:
1. The authorities are not quite agreeable to the idea, unfortunately. We have talked till the cows come home, but it's still a "we will look into the matter" attitude.
2. Some people (like my back neighbour!) cannot tolerate the presence of animals in our concrete jungle. They are not willing to live harmoniously with animals. They are not willing to share the earth with the animals.
My thoughts on this would be:
a. Build more sanctuaries where the captured animals can live out their natural lives.
b. Spay-neuter as many as possible.
c. Rehome as many as possible.
d. Cultivate compassion to animals through education, reading materials and by example.
AnimalCare is doing (b) and (d) and publicising for (c).
Many rescuers and also doing the above.
