On 13th May 2017, we published an urgent plea to rehome a mother-cat, Spora, inflicted with sporotrichosis and her kittens (also affected): https://myanimalcare.org/2017/05/13/urgent-rehoming-for-sporo-mum-cat-and-kittens-muhammad-shafiq-bin-abu-bakars/
We were really lucky because almost immediately, one of our readers (who has requested anonymity) responded to help, not by taking the family, but by offering to sponsor the medical treatment, supplies and food for the whole family.
En Shafiq was really thankful and has since brought the cat family to the vet and our kind reader, as promised, has sponsored all medications, medical supplies as well as food.
We wish to thank our anonymous reader for all her very kind and generous help, without which, all this would not have been possible.
Here are some updates from En Shafiq:
It has been 11 days since I first contacted you. For Spora, its been a little more than two weeks since her treatment started.
Here is an update on Spora and her kittens as per their last vet visit on Monday, 22nd May 2017. The vet mentioned that Spora’s condition was progressing well as her wounds has hardened and turning into crusts, this also includes the newly flared up sporo wounds. In addition to that, Spora’s weight has increase 400-500g after 7 days. I am pretty sure this is because Spora has been consuming high quality food.
As of now, the food I am giving Spora is a combination of;
- One can of Monge Natural Atlantic Tuna 80g, twice a day
- 1/3 of Hill’s Prescription Diet a/d Restorative Care (1/3 of 156g), twice a day
In addition to that, I would supplement Spora’s diet throughout the day by leaving Royal Canin First Age Mother & Baby Cat kibbles in the other food bowl.
The medication and supplements I am giving Spora are;
1. Itraconazole (Sporanox) for Sporotrichosis, 1/6 of a capsule once a day
2. Amoxicillin Trihydrate/Clavulanate Potassium (Antibiotics), 1 tablet twice a day for 7 days
3. Gentamicin eye ointment 3mg/g for eye infection, twice a day
1. VetriDMG 125mg for immunity, 1 tablet once a day
2. Liv.52 for the liver, 3ml twice a day
As for management, an e-collar is being used to prevent any unwanted spreading of the disease as her sporo wounds are exactly at her nails/paws. I would wash the e-collar once every few days with soap and diluted bleach in water.
In addition to that, under pads is being used as cushion and are layered above several sheets of newspaper. The under pads can be replaced easily to maintain cleanliness. I would also use disposable plastic gloves as protection from the bodily fluids. When administering medication and supplements, I have also learned to position my hand in the inner side of the e-collar, this has saved me many times from being scratched by the sporo paw.
So far things have progressed well, and with the support I am receiving, I am confident that Spora will make a full recovery in due time.
Now, an update for Spora’s kittens. The four kittens are doing very well, weighing around 900-950g each. Even the smallest one has put on the same amount of weight as compared with the other kittens. As instructed by the vet on my first visit, I separated the mother from her kittens in two different cages.At first, I only fed them Monge Natural Atlantic Tuna. The four kittens would share two cans of the wet food. However, as they are growing, I have been suggested to give them kitten kibbles, the same one I am feeding the mother. As for medication, the kittens were given liquid antibiotics, lysine as supplement, gentamicin eye ointment, and fungal medication in two different form, body powder and tablets. The kittens are responding well to treatment.
That is all for my update.——————————————————————–
Dr. Chan, I am very grateful as without your help, I would not have been able to get the aid I am receiving right now. In addition to that, I am also very grateful for the assistance your anonymous reader has provided thus far. I only can pray that God bless both you and her.
Thank you very much and take care.
