TIRED of seeing cats in her neighbourhood being tortured or run over by vehicles, Helen Lim and her husband decided to take care of all 40 to 50 of them.
For almost 20 years, the two animal lovers had no qualms about letting the cats take up most of the living space in their small flat.
With no children to dote on, the married couple had even spent most of their hard-earned money on cat food, cat litter and cages for their new furry companions.
At one time, the number of cats had doubled to over 100.
Lim, 73, can no longer afford to look after them since her husband died of old age two weeks ago at 78.
“I visited my husband at the general hospital for the two months up until his death.
“I haven’t been able to care for them as well as I did before and I don’t think I can do it all alone now,” she told reporters at her flat in Ipoh on Friday.
Many of the cats had died of old age throughout the years.
Now, Lim has 42 cats living with her – the oldest being an 18-year-old female while the youngest are a litter of two-month-old kittens.
“When he was still alive, my husband told me that I shouldn’t let any of them die alone and unattended.
“I’m asking for help from the public to place my cats under proper care with food and shelter so that they will not be left to roam around as strays,” she said with tears in her eyes at the mention of her late husband.
Lim contacted the Ipoh Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA) for help following a friend’s recommendation.
Society president Ricky Soong, who facilitated the visit to her home, said the cats will be taken to the vet over the next few months for health check-ups and neutering.
“As our shelter is already full of dogs and cats, we cannot accommodate more.
“But we will work on ensuring that all the cats are ready for adoption at an upcoming large-scale adoption drive in August.
“We hope through this drive, the cats can find new homes,” he said, adding that until then, Lim will continue looking after them.

"我寻求公众帮忙领养我的猫儿，让牠们有人照顾，有食物和住所，千万别遗留牠们在街头流浪。"
海伦哭泣的告诉记者，这是他丈夫死前的遗嘱。
在朋友的推荐，海伦联系了怡保防止虐待动物协会。
在协会的委员会参观了海伦家及了解她的情况后，协会会长宋伟釗表示，"由于我们的批护所已经爆满，我们不能容纳更多的动物，但我们确保所有的猫儿可以在来临的动物领养活动中，被公众领养，我们希望透过些活动，猫儿们都能找到新的家园。"
宋更补充说，在被领养前，海伦是会继续照顾猫儿们。
