International Day For The World's Indigenous Peoples - Iban 10th Aug 2018, by WWF Malaysia

In my culture, young men are encouraged to travel and see the world to gain knowledge and experience. We call this ‘bejalai’, which means ‘to walk’.
I'm grateful that my parents allow their daughter to embrace this tradition too. I've been fortunate to work ...

My late father used ‘putikaan’, a traditional method to determine the best time to go fishing, especially if he had to stay at sea for weeks. It was a dangerous affair with strong waves and winds, and unstable income due to dwindling fish stocks.
To me, being indigenous means living close to nature. As Bajau Ubian, we are very connected to the sea.
We are fishing communities, we build houses at coastal areas and we are born and raised by the seaside.
Because of this, I committed to con...

Watch how our science partners from The University of Queensland - UQ with support from Microsoft co-founder and philantropist Paul G. Allen, are using AI image recognition to resurvey the reefs of the Coral Triangle to find the ones less vulnerable to climate change.
