Updates On 29th Jul 2013 29th Jul 2013, by SPCA Singapore
Why do we use food as rewards in positive reinforcement training?
A dog can have different motivators (e.g. food, play, a chance to chase something, a car ride, etc.). When a dog starts learning something new, we choose the reward that motivates the dog most in that situation. For many dogs, food is one of the strongest natural rewards. Think of it this way - when you start a new job, the strongest motivator may be the salary. As you get better in your job, your priorities may begin to shift...

Caged Mr Zurik…but He Escaped 29th Jul 2013, by AnimalCare
It wasn’t planned, but since Mr Zurik was making a din this morning (so what’s new?), I lured him into the cage to eat his breakfast. He actually readily went in thinking it was a novel idea.
Only half his body went in, actually. Smart fella, but I gently pushed him in and thanks to the lure of food, he went in. Yes, the whole Mr Zurik was in and I closed the door gently. He didn’t know he’d been trapped!
Food, glorious food!
At least Willy could eat in peace.
I’m...

The Real Seaworld - YouTube 29th Jul 2013, by The Great Animal Rescue Chase
Another documentary brings to light the true nature of Sea World and other captive dolphin performances. Several countries have banned these "attractions" based on the science of cruelty that takes place here. Looking forward to the day when the ban on capturing and breeding marine mammals to perform for us becomes universal.

A Culture Of Abundance? 29th Jul 2013, by AnimalCare

When Will My Prayer Be Answered? 28th Jul 2013, by SPCA Seberang Perai
Dear God,
I have been sitting here for weeks now. Everyday I look out hoping someone will come take me home...But sadly, no one came so I continue to pray...and pray...and pray...to you every night before I sleep, hoping my prayers will soon be answered...
I heard the humans whisper among themselves the other day that someone is interested in me...My ears immediately perked up. Finally, I thought! I clean myself up, make myself pretty and waited eagerly for the "one" to show up.
30 minutes, 1...

Patchwork Cotton (handmade) Blankets For You, Your Pets And The Animals! 28th Jul 2013, by AnimalCare
My mum (who is 80 years old) is now making patchwork blankets to raise funds for the animals! She has made ample stock of keychains so I thought she should take a break now, but being someone who likes to keep busy, she has decided to spend her time to make patchwork blankets for us to raise funds.
We’ll be selling these blankets at our events; the next of which will be the Kinrara Metta Buddhist Society’s Funfair on 16th September 2013.
The blankets are hand-sewn, measuring 6ft X 4f...

Mama Dog & Her 4 Puppies Spotted @ Ocean Green Seafood Restaurant 28th Jul 2013, by SPCA Seberang Perai
A mama dog and her 4 puppies (2males & 2females) were spotted by Joanne & friend at the carpark of Ocean Green Seafood Restaurant when they went dining there few nights back. Those puppies are most of the time hiding under cars and playing around the area. This could be quite dangerous as vehicles move in and out most of the time and they may risk being hit and run over by cars.
Today, Joanne again went back to the place to feed the mama dog and her puppies. The puppies were de-wormed and spra...

Speaking Up For The Animals…and Humans Too! 28th Jul 2013, by AnimalCare
On certain days, I am privileged to be invited to give talks (though I’ve had to turn down almost 75% of the invitations ever since AnimalCare work was given priority).
Today’s sharing was at the Subang Jaya Buddhist Association. I spoke about “metta” (translated as “goodwill to all beings”) and invited the audience to examine their practice of it.
Of course, whenever I speak, inevitably, I will speak up for the animals too! But of course, I spoke up for margi...

Missing Senja: The Story Of A Lost Pet-Dog Nursed By A Compassionate Muslim Family 28th Jul 2013, by AnimalCare
Get ready some tissues to shed tears of joy, folks:
http://www.thestar.com.my/Lifestyle/Feature s/2012/12/30/Missing-Senja.aspx
It has a happy ending: Senja was reunited with his human family.
Some quotes:
To put it simply, Senja was such a “good” dog he brought out the good in us. A blessing, really.
You need tissues here:
Before he was whisked away, I pressed my hand against the car window. Senja responded by pressing his nose against the glass where I’d placed my palm. For a moment, he ...
