SINGAPORE’S NATIVE WILDLIFE: MYNAH BIRDS
As you spring clean your home today, have you ever wondered where our wild neighbours call home?
How about one of our most sighted neighbours- the mynah bird! Have you ever wondered what are their homes made of? A place to call home, a mynah bird’s nest consists of a variety of materials. Leaves, grasses, feathers and assorted items of rubbish are commonly used by these industrious birds to build their homes!

MEET WALNUT!
Walnut, a red-footed tortoise, was rescued last month after being found wandering around Pasir Ris Park. He was in terrible condition, with necrotic wounds on all four legs. A victim of the illegal exotic pet trade, he was probably illegally smuggled into Singapore to be sold as a pet, then abandoned by his owner.
We are pleased to report that Walnut’s condition and appetite are improving day by day, under the watchful eye of our caregivers, who are giving him lots of TLC and s...

New York Bans 'Tiger Selfies' 17th Feb 2015, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)
ANIMALS IN THE NEWS: "TIGER SELFIES" BANNED IN NEW YORK CITY!
Did you know that from this month, it is illegal for people in New York to take selfies with big cats? This is great news for the animals, for whom such photography sessions are undoubtedly stressful, and incredibly unnatural. It’s not uncommon for photography animals to be drugged and beaten too. And cubs bred for use as "photo props" may be neglected, mistreated and abandoned when they grow up and can no longer be used.
This ban...

A THANK YOU WITH A DIFFERENCE!
A lot of the time, we do not have the chance to meet the people who are thanking us. But the nice officers from the MSF (Ministry of Social & Family Development) decided to change things - with a cool twist! This is the special thank you card they sent us (to acknowledge the fact that ACRES welcomes youths doing their Community Service Order to volunteer with us), which literally melted every one of us in ACRES! To the Officers at MSF, you’re very welcome, and T...

THANK YOU, PARVARNE!
Parvarne volunteered at the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre for 2 months, from December 2014 to January 2015. She is a cheerful individual whose enthusiasm to help is contagious! Parvarne helped us tremendously in not only providing essential everyday care to the animals, but also assisted with providing veterinary care. We wish Parvarne all the best in her studies, and we look forward to seeing her again!

ANIMAL SENTIENCE: WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO
Why does ACRES exist? Why do we do what we do?
It really comes down to one reason: the fact that animals are sentient beings.
As well as feeling physical sensations such as pain, hunger and discomfort, plenty of evidence supports the notion that many of them experience a whole host of other feelings and emotions, including fear, happiness, grief and empathy, and many more.
However, as humans continue to exploit animals in so many ways, the feelings ...

OUR WISHLIST FOR 2015: SMALL WISHES THAT MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE!
This is a lime butterfly caterpillar whom we found at our ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre; one of the many interesting creatures we are blessed to come across.
Sometimes, it's the smallest things that could eventually become something beautiful.
If you think the contributions you make are small, think again. We have seen small contributions help the animals flourish and blossom and, more often than not, it’s the ones given with t...

HELP THE MACAQUES HAVE A SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE.
Manuka, a young long-tailed macaque, was found badly injured and taking shelter in a backyard. The injuries he had sustained appeared to be due to collision with a vehicle. Despite all our efforts to revive him, he sadly passed away. Not every macaque rescue has a positive ending, but let us recall the successful rescue stories.
In 2013, we managed to rescue, rehabilitate and release Mia, who had suffered a ruptured pelvis, probably due to a coll...

ANIMAL TRIVIA: SUGAR GLIDER
Sugar gliders are amazing little animals. Their scientific name, Petaurus breviceps, translates from Latin as "short-headed rope-dancer", a reference to their canopy acrobatics!
This tiny native of Australia is sadly commonly kept and sold as a pet, and you may see sugar gliders being illegally advertised for sale in Singapore: it is illegal to buy, sell or keep sugar gliders here. Unfortunately, we’ve had to rescue many sugar glider victims of the illegal exotic...

COMPASSION IN ACTION!
So, last week’s #ACRESThanksYou Sunday was about kids, and for this week, we want to showcase the adults! Recently, a beautiful civet – one of Singapore’s most elusive native mammals- decided to bunk in with the Tan family, but he got trapped - probably trying to explore their roof. What heartens us is the compassion Fabian and Elaine had towards the shy animal as, rather than calling a pest control company, they called us to rescue and relocate the civet to a more s...
